Lamayuru Monastry. Photo by Lila GurungLeh Lamayuru Trekking (Baby Trek in Ladakh) is one of the easy and cultures in Ladakh. Lamayuru is a Tibetan Buddhist Gompa (monastery) in Kargil District, Western Ladakh, India, situated on the Srinagar - Kargil - Leh road 15 km east of the Fotu La, at a height of 3,510 m.

It was originally the foremost Bonpo monastery in Ladakh and was called gYung-drung Monastery (from Tibetan: gYung-drung - a swastika - a popular symbol in Bon, Buddhism, and other religions); also gYung-drung-bon is the name of the Bon religion.
The Indian scholar Mahasiddhacarya Naropa (956-1041 CE), allegedly caused a lake which filled the valley to dry up and founded Lamayuru Monastery.

Lamayuru is one of the largest and oldest gompas in Ladakh, with a population of around 150 permanent monks resident. Lamayuru Trekking is the best time is from June to September.

It has, in the past, housed up to 400 monks, many of which are now based in gompas in surrounding villages. Lamayuru is host to two annual masked dance festivals, in the second and fifth months of the Tibetan lunar calendar, when all the monks from these surrounding gompas gather together to pray.

Outline Itinerary

Day 01: Leh - Likir : Drive to Likir village in the morning visiting Spituk and Phyang monasteries on the way. At Likir, you can visit Likir monastery and giant statue of Maitreya Buddha and trek down to camp. Overnight at camp.

Day 02: Likir - Yangthang (3 hrs) Take a well marked trail, gradually climb to a small pass Pobe-La (3550m). From the pass, head to Sumbo and reach Charatse-La (3650m).

Day 03: Yangthang - Hemis Shukpachan (5 hrs) Trek down the valley to reach Rizong Monastery following the down stream. After visiting the monastery,climb the Sermanchan La (3750m) . Stay over night in tent.

Day 04: Hemis Shukpachan - Tingmogang (3 hrs) Trek to Tingmogang village (3200m). Trek half hour easy descent towards the village Ang. From Ang, trek towards south to the prosperous village of Timisgam.

Day 05: Tingmogang - Khaltse (4 hrs) Walk through the village crossing fields to reach the river and then steep climb to Bongbong-La (3630m). Trek long and gradual downhill where the trek ends. Board a jeep and drive about 1 hour to Lamayuru, one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh and stay overnight in a guest house.

Day 06: Lamayuru - Leh Drive back to Leh visiting Alchi Chiskor en route. Stay over night in hotel.
